The AI Readiness Checklist for Bangladeshi SMEs: Are You Ready to Automate?

Before you spend a taka on AI, check whether your business is set up to benefit. This honest 7-point checklist tells you where to start — and what to fix first.

AI is the loudest topic in business right now, and plenty of Bangladeshi SMEs feel pressure to "do something with AI" before they have figured out whether it fits. The honest truth: AI delivers huge returns for some businesses and wastes money for others — and the difference is readiness, not budget.

Here is a practical 7-point checklist to know where you stand before you spend.

1. Do you have repetitive, high-volume tasks?

AI shines on work that repeats — answering the same questions, entering the same data, sending the same follow-ups. If your team does something 50+ times a day, that is a prime automation target. If your work is mostly one-off and bespoke, the returns are smaller.

2. Where do your customers actually contact you?

If most conversations happen on WhatsApp, Messenger, and phone calls — and they do, for most Bangladeshi SMEs — you have clear, high-value automation opportunities in chat and voice.

3. Is your data in one place, or in people's heads?

Automation needs something to read from. If your prices, stock, and orders live in scattered notebooks and memory, your first project is often simply getting that into one system. That groundwork makes everything after it work.

4. Can you describe your top 5 processes?

If you can write down, step by step, how an order or inquiry flows through your business, you are ready to automate it. If you cannot, that mapping is step one — and it is valuable on its own.

5. Do you have someone to own it?

Automation is not "set and forget." Someone needs to watch the results and tweak. It does not have to be technical — just accountable.

6. Are you measuring anything today?

If you track even basic numbers — calls received, orders per day, response time — you will be able to prove whether AI is working. If you measure nothing, start there.

7. Is leadership genuinely bought in?

The businesses that win with AI have an owner who treats it as a real initiative, not a side experiment. Half-hearted pilots fizzle.

Scoring yourself

Count your yes answers:

  • 5–7 yes: You are ready. Pick one high-volume task and automate it this month.
  • 3–4 yes: Close. Fix data and process mapping first, then automate.
  • 0–2 yes: Build the foundation — organise data and measure — before spending on AI.

For a guided version of this assessment tailored to your business, use the AI Readiness tool. When you are ready to act, the services overview shows where most Bangladeshi SMEs start — usually chat or voice automation, because that is where the volume is.

The honest bottom line

Readiness beats budget. A small shop with clear processes and one repetitive pain point will get more from AI than a larger business with money but no focus. Start narrow, measure, and expand.
